Meloni: “With these Olympics, Italy’s name resounds around the world”
Italy’s 2026 Winter Olympics have not only delivered record-breaking performances and logistical achievements but have also become a moment of national pride and international visibility, according to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

In remarks published on social media alongside the conclusion of the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games, Meloni said the event has “given us unforgettable emotions and a pride that will accompany Italy for a long time”. She emphasised that the efforts of Italian athletes, and the organisational work of volunteers, security forces, medical teams and public services, had made “the name of Italy resound in the world with extraordinary results”.

Italy’s performance at the Games was historic: the host nation secured its best ever Winter Olympics medal haul, finishing with 30 medals, including 10 gold, and placing fourth overall. The success spanned a range of disciplines and highlighted the depth of Italian winter sport, from women’s speed skating to alpine and Nordic events.

Meloni also expressed gratitude to those who helped stage the Games, from organising staff to volunteers and security personnel, saying their dedication helped present “an image of beauty and competence that has brought prestige to the entire nation”. As the Olympic flame was extinguished at the closing ceremony in the ancient Arena di Verona, she indicated that the spotlight now shifts to the imminent Paralympic Winter Games.

In recognition of Italy’s role in the success of Milano-Cortina 2026, the International Olympic Committee awarded Meloni and Sergio Mattarella the Order of Olympic Gold, its highest honour, citing their leadership in delivering a memorable Games.

Despite some protests and logistical challenges that emerged during the event, the overall narrative has been one of national unity and accomplishment.
